Heron Cove - On Sheridan Lake in southern Alabama the elusive heron reigns over cliffs, retreats to dense foliage and masterfully plucks fish as he quietly glides over the mirrored surface of a morning lake. Illustrative digital art by Gae.
Growing up on a lake I have long been fascinated by the abundant wildlife attracted to the varied habitats surrounding a large body of water. These wild herons near my mother's lakeside home proved too wary to capture with my camera but not with my imagination.
Photoshop gave me the tools to recreate the walls of vines intertwined with trees reshaped by the elements. The pen tool was used extensively in this image to bring shape to the vines, reeds and heron. Custom artist created brushes dabbled the colorful fall leaves. Cliffs, trees, log, and lake were formed from distortions of a stack of marble patterned layers.
